What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray'-kee) is the traditional Japanese technique of using Universal Life Force energy to promote healing, stress reduction, and relaxation. A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through you and surrounds you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, mind, and spirit, and creates many beneficial effects including feelings of peace, security, and well-being.

Reiki is a simple, natural, and safe method which uses the laying-on of hands. It is believed that Reiki was discovered in Tibet thousands of years ago. In 1922, Dr. Mikao Usui rediscovered Reiki while meditating on Mt. Kurama in Japan. Dr. Usui was on a quest to find a method of healing that did not deplete the practitioner's own energy. Reiki is not a religion, but is a recognition of a source of Divine Love and Energy that can be channeled through the practitioner. For links to more detailed information, visit the Resources page.

The National Institutes of Health Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) states that "People use Reiki for relaxation, stress reduction, and symptom relief, in efforts to improve overall health and well-being." NCCAM is currently supporting studies investigating how Reiki works and its effectiveness with symptoms of fibromyalgia, effects on disease progression, and on reducing nerve pain and cardiovascular risk in people with type 2 diabetes.
